Normally open electrical, abbreviated as NO (normal open), refers to the disconnection of an electrical component in its unoperated state (i.e. original state), with a logic of "0". In working mode, its state is connected, with a logic of "1".


Normally closed and normally open are exactly the opposite. NC (normal close) is an electrical abbreviation that refers to the state of an electrical component when it is not in operation (i.e. in its original state), with a logic of "1". In working mode, its state is disconnected with a logic of "0".


1. Application of Normally Open and Normally Closed in Hardware:

Normally open and normally closed are widely used for operating buttons, transfer switches, contactors, and relay contacts, emergency stop buttons, photoelectric switches, travel switches, proximity switches, grating alarms, and so on.


In terms of the above dynamic diagram, when the button is initially not pressed, the normally open contact is disconnected and the normally closed contact is closed. After someone presses it, the normally open contact is closed and the normally closed contact is disconnected.


So when is it normally closed? When will it be connected to normally open? When can I mix them up?


Normally closed is mainly used for safety devices, such as emergency stop switches, grating alarms, and travel switches that detect vehicles reaching their limit positions.

After using normally open contacts for such applications, if there is damage to the emergency stop switch contact or signal cable, the control device will not detect the emergency stop signal, resulting in serious equipment accidents or personal injury accidents;


So what if we use a normally closed point? After using the normally closed point, the current will flow back to the control device in the original normal state. However, once the button is loose or the cable is damaged, the control device will not detect the input signal and recognize it as an emergency stop state. Our attitude towards security features is that we would rather kill a thousand by mistake than let one go.
